Seminar Description

The PDPM Academy is a 10-month training effort lead by AHCA to help facilities prepare for this massive change.  The PDPM Academcy is both In-Person Training (February 27, 2019) and Continuing Updates and Support through webinars and online tools/resources.

Facility provider members of AHCA and KAHCF who register for the PDPM Academy will have access to:
- PDPM 101 workshop webinar (this webinar is a prerequisite to the February 27 training, you can access the webinar HERE)
- February 27, 2019, in-person training workshop taught by AHCA & a national consultant 
- Monthly AHCA workshop webinars on key topics and emerging PDPM issues
- "How To" webinars on implementing additional tools developed by AHCA


At the February 27 in-person workshop, participants will go in-depth on with hands-on experiential learning by:

  1. Aligning buildings and companies to transition to PDPM using AHCA’s Copyrighted PDPM Readiness Tool and Related Core Competencies;
  2. Classifying Residents into Case Mix Groups;
  3. Assessing market position in a PDPM environment; and
  4. Using Organization Business and Management Tools to reconfigure business planning. 

To be successful with PDPM, Administrators, MDS/Billing staff, Nurses/DONs, and Therapists must be included in the training.

Registration is open ONLY to KAHCF/KCAL Facility Members and registration is PER FACILITY. 

Once payment registration has been received, we will send registration information to AHCA (registrations will be sent on Fridays).  AHCA will then contact you directly with your PDPM Academy online access.  No refunds will be given once your registration information has been sent to AHCA.

Cathy Ciolek, DPT, GCS, FAPTA
Dr. Ciolek is President of Living Well With Dementia, LLC- providing education and consultation to promote well-being and positive expectations for people with dementia.  She has nearly 30 years physical therapy clinical experience working with older adults across the continuum of care including as staff PT, Director of PT and Director of Rehab in a skilled nursing facility and a not-for-profit continuing care retirement community. She served as Regional Director for the Pennsylvania Restraint Reduction Initiative (PARRI) and as a faculty member in the Department of Physical Therapy at the University of Delaware. Additionally, Cathy is Board Certified Geriatric Clinical Specialist, a Certified Dementia Practitioner® as well as a Certified Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia Care Trainer®. She was recently recognized as a Catherine Worthingham Fellow of the American Physical Therapy Association for her advocacy efforts for older adults.


Mike Cheek, Senior Vice President for Reimbursement Policy Affairs
Mike Cheek, Senior Vice President for Reimbursement Policy Affairs, joined AHCA/NCAL in January 2012.  Mike has a wealth of health care policy experience spanning 20-plus years.  He was the Medicaid Long Term Care director for the District of Columbia’s (DC) state Medicaid agency, the Department of Health Care Finance (DHCF).  During his tenure at DHCF, he established a new office within the department, the Office of Chronic & Long Term Care, restructured the state plan personal care benefit, and oversaw significant changes in the state’s reimbursement systems for nursing facilities and intermediate care facilities for persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities. In addition to his state experience from working for the DC government, Mike has worked for three state government associations – the state Medicaid directors where he focused on eligibility and long term care, the state developmental disabilities directors, and the state aging directors. Over his career, he has authored a wide array of papers and reports for organizations such as the Kaiser Commission on Medicaid and the Uninsured, the AARP Public Policy Institute, and California HealthCare Foundation.  He also has developed analytic reports on Medicaid and long term care financing and system structuring for states such as Alabama, California, Delaware, Indiana, Maryland, Nebraska, and Texas.  Finally, Mike has served on a number of advisory committees including the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Technical Expert Panels on Medicaid managed long term care and Affordable Care Act long term care provisions.
